Written by Lead residents Terrence Smith and Todd Jones in celebration of Lead's 150th Celebration
SYNPOSIS:
From the first whisper of gold in the Black Hills to the quiet hum of underground discovery, More Than Gold is a sweeping, music-infused theatrical journey through the history of Lead, South Dakota—a town shaped as much by its people as by the riches beneath their feet.
Told through a series of stories woven across generations, the play traces the rise of the Homestake Mining Company, the struggles and triumphs of those who lived and labored there, and the evolving identity of a community built on resilience. As prospectors stake their claims, families take root, and industry transforms the landscape, Lead becomes more than a mining town; it becomes a reflection of the human spirit.
Through moments of conflict, hope, loss, and reinvention—from labor disputes and suffrage movements to war, epidemic, and eventual closure—the people of Lead are continually asked the same question: Who are we when the thing that defined us is gone?
Blending live music written over the last 150 years in Lead, South Dakota, lyrical storytelling, and an ensemble cast portraying multiple roles, More Than Gold honors the past while looking toward the future. As the mine gives way to scientific discovery deep beneath the earth, the story of Lead continues, not as something lost, but as something transformed.
In the end, More Than Gold is not just about what was taken from the ground. It is about what was built above it, and what remains when everything changes.
