What's Happening at the HOH

March 2019:  Gold Camp Players features Tony Award-Winning Comedy Drama "The Humans"

2/21/2019

“[An] inestimably kind, rich and beautiful play…
truly remarkable and exceptionally moving.
Few writers of his generation have achieved anything quite like
The Humans…
a play about the horrors of ordinary life and the love we need to counter them.”

The Gold Camp Players (GCP) community theatre at the Homestake Opera House (HHOH) announces the performances for Stephen Karam’s Tony Award-winning dark comedy play The Humans on March 22-24 and March 29-30, 2019. Friday and Saturday shows start at 7:00 pm, and Sunday matinees start at 2:00 pm.

Admission is $15.00 for adults, $10.00 for HHOH members and $5.00 for students. Tickets may be purchased at the door, or online in advance of performances at homestakeoperahouse.org.

The Humans is directed by Rob Andresen and assistant director is Sierra Ward. Set design/build is by Joel Edgar. Stage manager is Sherry Bea Smith, and Phelan Scherer is light/sound technician.

“The play doesn’t necessarily lay out the story line from start to finish,” says Andresen. “The play makes each person in the audience think for themselves, to create why and what happens by using their imagination.”

ABOUT THE PLAY: The Humans is filled with equal parts humor and hurt, and tells the story of the quintessential family reunion – a group of people who love each other but still wrestle with basic human fears: old age, abandonment, poverty, and death. Breaking with tradition, Irish-American Erik Blake (Moses Ward) has brought his wife, Deidre (LeeAnn Paananen) and his mother (affectionately referred to as “Momo”, played by Diana Mathisrud) for Thanksgiving to the new home of his daughter Brigid (Laura Floyd) and her boyfriend (Dustin Floyd) in lower Manhattan. His mother is suffering from Alzheimer’s, and his other daughter Aimee (Lindsey Lothrop) has recently been the victim of a nasty breakup. The parents are disappointed that their daughters have left home to struggle in New York City, and worried the daughters are abandoning their values. As darkness falls outside the ramshackle pre-war duplex, eerie things start to go bump in the night and the heart and horrors of the Blake clan are exposed.

The Humans is produced in cooperation with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York, NY.

Support for The Humans is provided by the South Dakota Arts Council through the SD Dept. of Tourism from the National Endowment for the Arts. Support for the HHOH is provided in part by annual members, the City of Lead, and the Adams-Mastrovich Family Foundation, Mary Adams Mastrovich.

HISTORIC HOMESTAKE OPERA HOUSE SOCIETY MISSION:
Built in 1914 by the Phoebe Hearst and her Homestake Gold Mining Company, this historic performing arts venue and recreation center boasted an exquisite theater with 1,000 seats, and a library, a bowling alley, a billiards hall, a social hall, and a heated indoor swimming pool.

From its construction in 1914 until a catastrophic fire in 1984, the Opera House was the center of community life and lifelong education in Lead, South Dakota. The Society is dedicated to its restoration, use, and preservation for future generations, in the belief that it is the cornerstone for the preservation, renewal, and development of our community.

While these efforts continue, the Society makes use of the facility to the extent possible to generate revenue and advance its mission.
The theater is host to 40 performing arts/educational events while restoration progress is underway from a fire in 1984. The theater currently seats 500. Visit year-round for building tours and see the new Interpretive Center upstairs and recently restored walls in the theater.
This institution is an equal opportunity provider. Click here to read our full statement.
